"Dona Mercedes crouched beside me and took the cigar from my mouth. She puffed at it, mumbling an incantation, a different one from mine. I felt a tremor in my body; an invisible hand gripped me by the throat. I heard myself making whizzing, gurgling noises. To my amazement, they sounded like words said by someone else with my own vocal cords. I knew instantly - although I did not understandthem - that they were words of yet another incantation. The apparition hovered over my head, and then it disappeared."
